Course Title: ART101 Studio Art Appreciation

Course Description

ART 101: STUDIO ART APPRECIATION, 3 credits, GEP, Elective Credit 

An introduction to the visual arts using lectures, discussions, museum and gallery visits, exhibition reviews, and hands-on studio experiences with the materials, concepts, and processes of art with the purpose of providing insight into functions, content, and making of art objects. May not be applied to a major in art..

 

Course Objectives

  1. Students will develop an understanding of the common terms used to discuss and analyze art. 

  2. Students will develop an understanding of the visual arts in a historical and contemporary context.

  3. Students will develop an understanding of common studio art practices.

  4. Students will develop an understanding of the role organizations play in making the arts available. 

 

Course Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to use common terms used to discuss and analyze art in context. 

  2. Students will be able to discuss art from a historical and contemporary context.

  3. Students will be able to discuss common studio practices and give examples of how artists utilize them. 

  4. Students will be able to identify the purposes of art and the roles of the artist. 


Project 1: Arts Journal Reflections

Students will be asked to respond to reflection questions that relate to the content for the week. These are intended to be brief reflections on the topics covered. (Weeks 1-7)

Project 2: Arts Activities

This category includes opportunities to create your own pieces of art using materials readily available as well as opportunities to participate in museum or gallery visits (in person or virtual). Detailed instructions will be given on the Canvas course page for the corresponding week. You will have multiple options to choose from for each of these assignments. (Week 2, 4, and 7)

Project 3: Final Project

Throughout this course, students will examine what art is, why people create it, and what processes are used by artists. While the primary content each week will be required for all students, you will also have options to select from multiple content areas that relate to the primary content each week. As you do so,
