Student Response (What is Art to You?):

In my opinion, art is a tool to help one expand his or her mind. One's perception of a piece of art may highlight his or her beliefs or a piece of art may help mold his or her beliefs. Just like literature, art defines society through what the piece of art communicates. I believe a lot of art (in America) is centered around social injustice and social reconstruction at the moment because of events that have taken place in the United States that have changed society. While art has been used to subtly communicate a need for social reconstruction among other issues, it also

simultaneously helps observers appreciate the talent and power that artists hold. I took art 2D in high school, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My favorite piece of art that I worked on was a surrealism watercolor painting of a bee within a shower that was crafted of honeycomb. The painting is based off of one of my favorite novels, The Secret Life of Bees, and it communicates the beauty of growth.
