COURSE DESCRIPTION (Catalog): 414. SENIOR SEMINAR/ONE CREDIT
Required course for all art majors excluding art history, and interior design. A course to assist seniors in improving career preparation skills such as conceptual competency, digital portfolio presentation and documentation in conjunction with website development, gallery and exhibition preparation, and professionalwriting skills in graduate entry and job applications. Capstone for BA and BFA in studio art.
COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Understanding of the components required for formally presenting a body of personal visual work for public presentation.

Ability to create and present professional written documents supporting the body of visual work offered for public presentation.

Knowledge of how to communicate the objectives of the body of work, influences upon the work, and connections to future career plans.

Accurate usage of the technical terminology of the art profession and their individual degree focus within the art profession.

Professional documentation of their verbal and visual work in multiple digital formats.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Students will be able to identify a selection of personal work that represents a cohesive body ofworks and present them for a discussion in traditional and digital formats.

Students will be able to support their selected body of work and prepare written documentsrepresenting different aspects of the work in specific formats: artist statement, biography, andcv/resume.

Students will be able to clearly communicate in multiple formats (speaking, writing and image presentation) the objectives for the selected body of work, identification of key influential figures in the art world, and prepare supplemental documents that can support graduate school application, job applications, funding applications, and related professional opportunities.

Students will be able to demonstrate accurate use of the technical terminology related to the arts through verbal critique, explanation of their work through written documents and conduct digitalpresentations.

Students will be able to document their visual work digital format for presentation in a PowerPoint (or Google Slides), inclusion on a thumb drive and uploaded as .jpeg and .pdf files to a personalwebsite.

Work completed in ART 414 is done is preparation for ART415, Senior Exhibition, and may be considered a rough draft of what is collected and graded in ART415. Many students continue working on these documents as the year progresses and they work with faculty on polishing the final versions for their senior exhibition. ART414 is the initial introduction on how to begin creating these documents.
Project 1: Artist Statement.
Students will learn how to write an effective and clear artist statement to coincide with their work.
Project 2: Artist Biography.
Students learn how to write an effective an artist biography to coincide with their work.
Project 3: Resume/ CV.
Students will learn how to make a CV or resume.
Project 4: Announcement Card.
Students learn how to make an effective announcement card for their senior exhibition.
Project 5: The Artist Talk.
Students learn how to give an effective artist talk. This is the culminating event in the course, students present a 5-10min presentation to their peers.
Project 6: Image List and Pricing.
Students learn how to appropriately price their work and make an image list for a show and to apply to various opportunities.
Project 7: Grant Writing and Resources for Artists.
Students are introduced to grant writing and the professor goes over many resources for artists to find opportunities for exhibitions, grants, residencies, etc.…
Project 8: Websites for Artists.
Students review how to create an effective website (they learned this Freshman year). Students and faculty critique websites during class. Websites must be updated with new information including, new images of work, bio, statement, abbreviated CV, news, etc.
