Course Title: ART 464: Art History Internship
Term: Fall 

Course Description 

Major, Elective credit. Prerequisites: ART 201 and 202. The internship provides students with the opportunity to develop disciplinary skills and explore a variety of career options. Among potential venues for the internship are museums, galleries, auction houses, historic properties, libraries, and corporate art collections. Students may shadow curators, art critics, art historians in academia, art dealers, museum education specialists, and other arts professionals. Projects may focus on curatorial practice, cataloguing, archival methods, registrar work, preservation, research, art criticism, blogging, grant writing, or other professional activities relevant to the field. Pass/fail grading.

Course Objectives 

  1. To have a hands-on working experience in a museum or gallery approved by the advisor/instructor and present the experience orally. 

  2. To develop business acumen necessary for the fine art field. 

  3. To document the experience and reflection through journal or digital media. 

 

Course Outcomes

  1. Students will complete 120 hours with their internship site. Hours will be conducted primarily on-site but may be supplemented with independent work off-site with permission from faculty supervisor.  

  2. Students will develop a portfolio of work samples from the internship including resume and documentation of projects which will demonstrate skills necessary to be successful in the arts  workplace. 

  3. Students will maintain a daily journal documenting their work experience and present in power point.

Project 1: Internship site and work: 

Students will complete 120 hours at an internship site. Off-site hours may be conducted with permission from faculty supervisor and may include professional development opportunities. Students are expected to check in with the faculty advisor several times during the term and supply a midterm and final copy of their sign-in form for review at midterm and final dates. Usually a site visit is conducted by the faculty director at least once during the internship. Problems or unusual situations that may occur on the site should be reported immediately to the faculty advisor.

Project 2: Daily/Weekly Journal and Personal Reflections: 

A daily/weekly journal will be maintained by the student, which records tasks and responsibilities. This journal is also meant to be used as means of reflection on her time at the internship site. This journal may also be 

digital. At midterm and the conclusion of the internship, students will also write a reflection on the internship experience as it relates to arts

management studies and future goals.

Project 3: Digital and/or Product Portfolio of work samples from the internship. 

A portfolio (digital format or hard copies) of work completed during the internship, including an updated resume which includes your internship experience resume. Be sure you are documenting your work throughout the semester, taking photos when appropriate to share your experience. You will also submit copies of any materials (digital or print) that you work on as part of your internship.
