Course Title: ART 311: Art for the Child
Term: Fall and Spring
Course Description:
ART 311: ART FOR THE CHILD/ THREE CREDITS. Required for some Education majors. The purpose of this course is to examine the basic concepts and principles of art as they relate to a child’s creative and mental growth. Students will study the materials and methods for teaching art to children and strategies for integrating art into other content areas to support creative and critical thinking. This course is not open to Art Education majors who must take the advanced courses Art for the Elementary School and Art for the Elementary School Clinical. Lab Fee.

Course Objectives:

To broaden knowledge and understanding of the value of arts learning experiences in the elementary/middle school curriculum.

To develop strategies for the integration of the arts with other academic subjects.

To develop an understanding of children’s potential growth in art with regard to their physical, mental, and sociological development.

To develop knowledge of art materials and processes.
Course Objectives:

Students will identify and write about art terminology and use it appropriately during critiques and other activities. Students will also be required to complete 4 gallery reviews in addition to chapter readings and presentations of chapters.

Evidence of Arts Integration with other academic subjects in 2 lesson plans, activities, grade level long-range plan, and PowerPoint presentations for each lesson.

Evidence of scope and sequential planning for child development in 2 lesson plans and projects.

Creation of various studio projects and activities demonstrating efficacy with materials and supplies.

Course Requirements:
Curriculum planning: 2 Original lesson plans if you are an education major, or 2 Art Activity Plans if you are a Child/Family Studies major using strategies for teaching students in art. Lesson plans and activity plan templates are posted on Canvas.

Gallery Review: 1 gallery review that comprises students using appropriate art vocabulary art and terms to write a review about a professional solo or group exhibit.

Powerpoint Presentation: Students will create a Powerpoint presentation to enhance a lesson plan of their choice. The Powerpoint should consist of no more than 5 visually attractive slides, objectives, procedures, and state or national core and visual art standards.

Final Exam: Students will create a social justice poster that promotes a cause that they are interested in, and have thoroughly researched. The poster must fully portray their interests and passions for a particular topic.

Virtual Portfolio:
Students will submit a virtual portfolio (pictorial images loaded onto Canvas) of all projects that are created in class. Projects are as follows:
Quadrilateral Robot: This project integrates math and visual art in that students must create a 2D robot using only quadrilaterals.
Radial Paper Symmetry: This project incorporated Japanese origami techniques while integrating symmetry and radial design

Weaving Project: This project incorporates weaving techniques from all over the world, and students are able to choose different forms of weaving such as : plastic cup weaving, cardboard loom weaving, paper plate weaving, and others.

Map It!: This project utilizes map skills and actual maps to create abstract art
Multicultural Masks: Students will research a non-western cultural or ethnic group, and create a mask using plaster gauze in the likeness of the masking culture from their chosen group.
Truffula Tree: Students will create their own version of a Truffula Tree inspired by the movie, The Lorax. They will creativity and problem solving skills with their chosen medium (model magic or air dry clay).
Eric Carle inspired collage: Students will create a collage in the style of children’s book author, Eric Carle. This project incorporates visual art, literature, and science.

Responses:
Students are required to submit 1-2 paragraph responses to writing prompts presented by professor or in response to articles provided on the Canvas module online.
