Course Title: DES 386 Lighting
Term: Fall 

Course Description

Characteristics of light and lighting systems and their application to interiors, including sources, color rendering, impact, control, regulations, and sustainability. The final design project features creative and functional lighting solutions in a digital, professional format. Field trips and speakers included. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES, OUTCOMES, AND GOALS

The successful completion of this course will result in student understanding:

  1. Interior design majors will combine design theory, creativity, and functionalism to develop effective interior solutions.

  2.  Interior design majors will create design solutions featuring a human-centric design that responds to user needs and promotes health and well-being.

  3. Interior design majors will justify their design decisions through written and verbal statements.

  4. Interior design majors will utilize their knowledge and skills to complete entry-level interior design responsibilities.

 

Student outcomes and experiences indicate understanding and use of light and lighting design for interior design solutions.

  1. Lighting design is human-centric; research gained from multiple sources, and solutions address issues of human experience, behavior, and performance.

  2. The creative and pragmatic application of color and light is guided by the understanding of their use and impact to benefit people's well-being, including health, safety, welfare, and physiology.

  3. The relationship between light and lighting in the natural and built environment is recognized to have an impact on and be related to people's experience, behavior, and performance.

  4. Environmental responsibility and human well-being are considerations in the selection of lighting systems.

  5. Throughout history, light and lighting have been used for safety, health, welfare, and comfort, to relate image, and provide beauty; now, with this knowledge, the designer selects sources, uses terminology and language, visual and verbal presentations, and professional documentation.

  6. Understanding and applying light and lighting includes understanding its interactions with the human experience, the principles and elements of design, electrical systems, interior construction, building codes, and standards.

  7. The information gained is from various sources, including collaborations with allied professionals who are aligned with professional organizations and support life-long learning experiences.

  8. The work to complete lighting within a design project is actualized by a team approach by the multiple design and build professionals.

  9. Outcomes are accomplished and visualized through written statements, sketching, professional drawing techniques, and verbal descriptions.


 

Assignment 1: By researching the hottest trends in lighting and luminaire design, students acquaint themselves with the latest cutting-edge lighting systems and worldwide trends.

Assignment 2: In applying lighting solutions, considering how sunlight affects interior spaces during various times of the year and day is critical to accurately controlling the amount of electrical lighting needed to provide an adequate and sustainable solution. Students conduct a computer-generated simulation on their Commercial Projects to better understand the use of daylighting.

Assignment 3: In the continued development of understanding lighting needs for various activities, students research the IES Recommended Foot Candles to calculate the number of lumens needed for their Commercial projects based on individual areas of activity.

Project 1: How natural lighting affects interior space is a phenomenon that has become ever more present in contemporary times. As part of this project, students physically construct a daylight Light Box by creatively strategically locating an opening within an enclosed 3D model to understand how nature can affect the quality of light within an interior space

Project 2: Good lighting design is dependent on a variety of factors. In constructing a luminaire, students begin to address issues relating to the design and fabrication of luminaires. Part of the process reinforces the student's understanding of lighting metrics, how lights behave, and how to control the various effects of lighting for optimal design solutions.

Project 3: Providing a comprehensive lighting solution to a full-scale commercial project requires an in-depth analysis of the type of design project, allowing students to apply lighting solutions that promote Human-contended design, system thinking, and creative pragmatic applications to color and light within a commercial setting.
