Course Title: DES 282 Introduction to Interior Design
Term: Fall 

Course Description: 

Introduction to interior design, including design theories, human factors, interior components, and contemporary issues explored through sketching, model making, research, and design projects.

 

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES, OUTCOMES, AND GOALS:

Student project outcomes indicate their appropriate development in understanding and applying an introductory level of:

  1. Principles and elements of design as applied to interior design aesthetics.

  2. Principles and design elements with the products and applications of interior finishes, furnishings, and interior architecture.

  3. Social responsibility, including sustainable design and human factors through diagrams and drawings of the body, the use of furnishings and equipment, product development, and interpersonal relationships.

  4. Creative process-visualizations in two and three-dimensional formats.

  5. Sketching and drafting for interiors.

  6. Speaking and writing skills through class presentations and short statements.

 

Assignments

Assignment 1 - Form and Spatial Envelope Models – Students create four spatial expressions with paper models.

​

Assignment 2 - Texture and Pattern – Students begin to understand the creative applications of Texture and Pattern

 

Assignment 3_ Rhythm and Stairs – Students begin understanding Rhythmic application through a creative stair system assignment.

 

 

Assignment 4 - Balance, Proportion, and Scale – Students begin to understand the application of Balance, Proportion, and Scale through a creative presentation and exercise on drafting.

 

Assignment 5 - Color Wheel – Students begin to understand the application of color theory by reading and answering a series of questions from their book while simultaneously performing exercises related to the color theory being presented.

 

Assignment 5.1 - Sherwin Williams – Students begin to understand how to apply color to walls that exemplify a particular condition or characteristic.

 

Assignment 6 - Balance and Aesthetics – Students begin to understand how to apply Principles and Elements of Design related to interior components.

 

Assignment 7 - Architectural Standards A – Students begin learning how to draft essential interior components.

 

Assignment 7.1 - Arch.  Standards B – Students begin learning how to draft more complex interior components.

 

Projects:

Design Enlightenment Challenge – Author and Interior Designer Bea Pila invites students to think of spaces from the inside out through her Design Enlightenment Challenge. Here students begin to tap into their senses and allow their emotions to guide them through the process. Students begin to understand the spatial applications of feeling using tangible materials and textures to describe space and reveal the intangible quality that interior spaces can conjure.

 

Mood/Lifestyle Presentation – Students begin to understand the concept development process through a video slide show that allows students visually and thymically interpret their concept that leads them through their first residential project.

 

Condo Project – Students' first small-scale residential project where they learn to apply Principles and Elements of Design related to Interior Components.

 

Corporate Lobby Project – Students' first small-scale commercial project where they reinforce the concepts relating to Programing, Concept Development, and Presentation.
