Course Title: DES 383 Codes & Materials
Term: Fall 

COURSE DESCRIPTION​

Overview of building codes and regulations including their importance and impact on interior design solutions aligned with health, safety and welfare; and a range of interior materials and their properties, sustainable attributes, fabrication, performance, value, and installation methods. Field trips take place and speakers are invited to the classroom. 

 

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Interior design majors will have an understanding of social responsibility applied to the protection of the health, safety, and welfare of the public. 

  2. Interior design majors will be able to research legal regulations and guidelines, and materials in relation to interior design; and be able provide findings in a variety of formats including applications. This aligns with entry level responsibilities.

  3. Interior design majors will effectively be able to discuss the functional application of materials and apply them to interior design solutions.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: 

  1. Interior design majors will understand and apply sustainable design practices, processes, and products.

  2. Interior design majors will understand the codes and application of universal design, building codes, and professional specifications. 

  3. Interior design students will gain knowledge in understanding professional specifications, manufacturing companies, and the process of ordering physical sample materials.

PROJECT 1: 

Montgomery Assignment:

The assignment helps students understand and apply basic building and life safety codes. Students are assigned different topics relations to codes and regulations and identify them from the Montgomery Student Center floor plan. Students apply the knowledge with the help of the class PowerPoints and The Codes Guidebook for Interiors text book.

PROJECT 2:

Learn twice by teaching others, materials research assignment: 

During the assignment, students research a material within the built environment. Students create a PowerPoint presentation and present their topic in class. The files are then shared among the classmates and used as reference for the final exam.

PROJECT 3:

Coffee shop specification: 

During the assignment, students are required to select wall and floor finishes, upholstery, hard surfaces, some structural materials, and wall coverings for a coffee shop project. the projects main focus is on the codes and guidelines related to the material performance, durability, application and sustainable features. Students collect the information and feature their work in a materials identification swatch log and sheet, materials board, specify characteristics, item numbers, and manufacturers.

PROJECT 4: 

Hard-wall assignment: 

students work on a custom hard-wall and a column wrap to be located within the entry area and throughout the hall for an upcoming exhibition. During this assignment, students learn the application of hard-wall and the structural components, as well as material application.
