COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Space planning and detailing of creative and functional kitchen and bath solutions for residential and commercial interiors including codes, human factors, building systems, sustainability, cabinetry and appliances, precedent, and contextual applications. Design visualization using sketching, digital drafting and rendering. Speakers and field trips included. Prerequisites: DES 284, 286 or permission of instructor. 

 

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES, OUTCOMES AND GOALS

  1. Interior design majors will combine design theory, creativity and functionalism to develop effective interior solutions.

  2. Both projects require conceptual development based on design theories, creativity and functional needs and the solutions must clearly demonstrate these. 

  3. Interior design majors will create design solutions featuring human-centric design that responds to user needs and promotes health and wellbeing.

Both projects require research to identify needs of people with physical challenges and/or who are elderly; solutions must be a response to research findings and be safe, accessible and beneficial, incorporating legal regulations and sustainable design.

  1. Interior design majors will justify their design decisions through written and verbal statements.

  2. Both projects require written concept statements and extensive annotations, and each will culminate with a formal, verbal presentation of the solution that depicts and explains the design process, drawings and documentation, and the solution.

  3. Interior design majors will utilize their knowledge and skills to complete entry-level interior design responsibilities. 

  4. Projects include working in groups and collaboration with experts, following specific directives, identifying client needs and designing for those needs, space planning, selection of finishes and furnishings, applying building codes and standards, integrating plumbing and electrical systems, and developing professionally formatted drawings.

 

PROJECTS:

Project 1: Kosher Kitchen Project- Community Outreach Project in Collaboration with Chabad Center of Greenville.

Kosher kitchen Requirements and guidelines:

  1. Refer to page 69-70 in your Residential Interior Design textbook, on “Kitchen Programing Questioner”.

  2. Refer to Chapter 4 in your Residential Interior Design textbook for kitchen layout codes and guidelines. Make sure to go over this chapter before/while you are working on your block plan.  

 

Guidelines:

  • Only foods, which are certified “kosher”, can enter the kitchen.

  • Meat and dairy food and products need to be separated.

  • Dishes, utensils, cooking tools, are required to be separated for meat and dairy.

  • Two separate ovens

  • Two separate stovetops

  • Two separate surfaces for preparing and serving meals - meat and dairy.

  • Two different dishwashers 

  • One refrigerator- (no need for two). With the ability to organize food in separate corners of the refrigerator

  • Meat and dairy tablecloths, cloth napkins, and placemats. 

 

Materials and finishes:

  • Metal or stainless steel sinks are recommended since that are easy to clean, can hold the capacity of boiling water, and fall under the kosher requirements.  

  •  Dishes, utensils, cooking tools are recommended to have two distinct colors, patterns or styles to avoid confusion between meat and dairy.  

  •  Two Different color schemes or textures can be applied to Cabinetry, shelving, to distinguish between meat and dairy areas. This can be applied in the hardware as well- such as handles. 

 

Project requirements: 

Presentational drawings in color. Format TBD. 

 

  1. Drawing Scales and Dimensions: 

  2. Floor Plans to be 1/4” =1’-0” scale. 

  3. Elevations to be ½” = 1’-0”.

   * Presentational drawings to be in feet.

Floor plan: 

  • With overall dimensions, cabinet and counter top identification, annotations! 

  • Annotate with design requirements, storage areas, special features, any sustainable products.

Electrical: 

  1. Floor plan with electrical outlets, under cabinet lighting, switching, and legend for symbols. 

  2. Annotate with code requirements, appliances and fixtures.

  3. Labeling: Plans must be labeled for fixtures, appliances, finishes, design features and code compliance as applicable.

 

One main Elevation showing the majority part of the kitchen and information: 

  • Indicate general dimensions of heights: cabinets, shelves, handles/pulls/knobs, accessories, and cabinet baseboard trim.  

  • Show electrical outlets, under-cabinet lighting, and annotations.   

  • Label and annotate finishes and special features.

  • FF&E (finishes, fixtures and equipment) schedule and symbols legend.

  • Styles of cabinet doors. The doors need to be drafted correctly and annotated with their correct terminology, both the door style and face frame style. For example, cabinet door panels- are they a flat panel, raised panel, slab panel? Glass casement panel, Is the face frame a full overlay, partial overlay, inset overlay? - add all terms.

  • Specify the styles of counter tops, materials, color, etc. 

  • Include images of the selected finishes, their color, material, and the company you searched. Images should be in color, appropriately labeled.
