Course Title: DES 288 Interior Construction
Term: Fall 

Course Description

A survey of interior systems, materials, and construction methods in commercial applications. Students will study construction development, working drawings, and specification details. Emphasis is placed on building codes, barrier-free design, and life safety factors. Prerequisites: DES 282, 283, or permission of the instructor.

 

 

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES, OUTCOMES, AND GOALS

  1. Creative and functional applications of art and design theory complemented by-products and processes used to develop their interior solutions; manual and digital methods of graphic visualization competently used to portray their interiors; and verbal and written explanations of their interiors.

  2. The social responsibility is to practice sustainable design and protect the public's health, safety, and welfare.

  3. Student project outcomes indicate their appropriate development in understanding and applying an introductory level of:

    •  Communication graphics: students will execute process sketches and working drawings, including; custom elements, materials specifications, fabrication options for millwork, cabinetry, woodwork, and elevation and section details.

    •  Students will produce working drawings communicating their design intent, and demonstrating electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and structural wall and ceiling system knowledge.

    •  Social responsibility: students will produce working drawings demonstrating basic knowledge of occupancy requirements, lighting, egress/ exit distances, and life safety information.

    •  Students will demonstrate knowledge of ADA codes through space planning, furniture scale, and dimensions to produce barrier-free environments.

 

Project Assignment:

In this class, students must produce a full set of Interior Construction Documents for a Residential or Commercial Space that includes 12 completed drawings representing various aspects of the construction process. Students must accurately create and detail the following plans:
