Interior design majors will combine design theory, creativity, and functionalism to develop effective interior solutions. Both projects require advanced levels of conceptual development based on design theories, creativity, and functional needs, and the solutions must demonstrate these.

Interior design majors will create design solutions featuring a human-centric design that responds to user needs and promotes health and well-being. Design solutions must respond to research findings on health, safety, and human welfare, incorporating legal regulations and sustainable design.

Interior design majors will justify their design decisions through written and verbal statements. Both projects require written concept statements and extensive annotations, and each will culminate with a formal, oral presentation of the solution that depicts the design process, findings, and resolution.

Interior design majors will utilize their knowledge and skills to complete entry-level interior design responsibilities.

Projects include working in teams and collaborating with experts, following specific directives, identifying client needs and designing for those needs, space planning, specification of materials and furnishings, working with existing structures, applying building codes and standards, integrating lighting solutions and thermal comfort, integrating plumbing and electrical systems, and developing professionally formatted presentations.
COURSE PROJECT:
Next Project: Steelcase Competition for 2021. The NEXT Cosmetic project is a Manhattan-based New York cosmetic company set in the Upper West Side. Students must create a functionally inclusive, collaboratively based, and diverse environment that encourages a productive workplace through innovative technology, sustainability, and life-safety considerations while incorporating the client’s Korean background. Students are responsible for designing a 15,000 sq. ft. two-story commercial structure, where they will be responsible for providing programming, research, space planning, concept and design development, and specifications. The requested space is to include a reception area, private offices, open office space, small and medium, and large meeting rooms, a work cafe, an ample meeting space, a retail mock-up space, product and swag storage, a projection room, video room, photography studio, marketing project room, resource center, mother’s room, rejuvenation room, and a wildcard space.
